Montana State University started the new budget year last week needing to cut $1 million in spending, and so far at least, the belt-tightening hasn’t required any layoffs. However, it’s too early to say for certain if Bozeman’s biggest employer can avoid layoffs completely. For now, department leaders say they’re trying to absorb their share of cuts by not filling job vacancies, eliminating travel and training and taking other steps that don’t cost people their jobs.
