Representatives from the university and the professors union, the American Association of University Professors, have been meeting twice a week. While they haven't yet touched salary issues, union leaders are raising concerns about the president's $100,000 pay increase last year and subsequent implementation of salary freezes just last month for himself, executives and nonunion staff. "It's symbolic," said Joel Russell, president of Oakland's chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). "He can take no raise this year and put pressure on us to take no raise. If we had 40 percent pay raises last year we would have gone into bargaining this year and would have asked for nothing. Given the state of the economy, we would have given some of it back."
